A friend of mine asked me recently, what do you like the most about air conditioners? This is a difficult question to answer because there is so much to like about air conditioning that it’s hard to name just one thing to like the most! I spent about 3 hours chewing his ear off about the peculiarites of ac mini split air conditioners and air filters, not to mention the differences between portable air conditioners and ductless air conditioner. Surprisingly enough, he wasn’t satisfied – I guess the love of air conditioners must have inspired his imagination. He asked me to review various makes and models, as well as the various brands of air conditioner manufacturers.
Needless to say, it was a thrilling afternoon of scintillating discourse. We only scratched the surface, mind you, so it looks like we’ll be having weekly discussions of all things relating to air conditioning in the coming months.
How Do Air Conditioners Work?
It largely depends on the type of air conditioner, but lets say you have a refrigeration cycle model. To quote wikipedia:
In the refrigeration cycle, a heat pump transfers heat from a lower temperature heat source into a higher temperature heat sink. Heat would naturally flow in the opposite direction. This is the most common type of air conditioning. A refrigerator works in much the same way, as it pumps the heat out of the interior into the room in which it stands.
Obviously, if your air conditioner doesn’t fit this description, it will probably work in a different way.
Air Conditioner Manufacturers
There are a number of great companies that are doing their bit to help keep your air conditioned. Edgestar are quite well known for their portable air coolers whereas Daikin would probably be one you’ve heard quite a bit about. Samsung and LG seem to have a finger in just about every pie going in the electronics market so there’s little doubt you know about them.
A Raving Fan of Air Conditioning, Who Would Have Thought?
Well, it certainly was a great day for me and my friend. I look forward to having many more chats about this most favourite topic of mine, the humble air conditioner!
